When Your Pet Has a Muffin Top: Fighting Pet Obesity in Dogs and Cats

When Your Pet Has a Muffin Top: Fighting Pet Obesity in Dogs and Cats
October 9, 2017

  • Pet obesity cases are on the rise worldwide. 54% of dogs and 59% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese based on a 2016 survey conducted by The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP).
  • Obesity can cause a plethora of pet diseases ranging from various cancers, urinary tract diseases, liver disorders, heart and respiratory disease, endocrine disorders including diabetes, and joint impairments ranging from arthritis to knee injury. Obesity also decreases overall lifespan in dogs and cats.
  • The Body Condition Score (BCS) is a useful tool to determine your dog or cat’s fitness level.
  • Consulting with your veterinarian to formulate an individualized weight loss plan is essential for a safe and healthy diet and exercise regimen. At-home lifestyle changes as well as a prescription weight loss diet are all valuable means of helping your pet reach a healthy weight. Starving an overweight pet is never the answer!

Get Your Trick-or-Treat On!: A Halloween Special from The Meowing Vet
October 20, 2017

  • Happy (belated) Halloween! We hope you had fun yesterday! Halloween may be spooky for us humans, but our pets don’t deserve a fright. The Meowing Vet explains pet safety tips for this holiday. Remember them for next year!
  • Chocolate and sugar-free treats that contain xylitol are dangerous toxins if consumed by your dog or cat! Halloween decorations such as mini pumpkins and decorative corn pose as potential choking or GI foreign body hazards. Jack-o-lantern candles can also pose a fire hazard if toppled over by your pet.
  • Keep both your pets and trick-or-treater guests safe this holiday by securing your dog or cat in a cozy location to prevent unnecessary anxiety, dog bites, or the risk of running away.
  • Avoid pet costumes if your dog or cat appears frightened or uncomfortable.
  • The Meowing Vet shares a simple recipe for an edible chocolate and vanilla Kitty Litter Cake that’s sure to wow your Halloween party guests!
  • Check out our favorite pet-themed Halloween finds from Amazon!
