Getting Real about Renal Failure: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in cats & Dogs
July 16, 2018
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a relatively common medical condition in older dogs and cats, especially in geriatric felines. Between 30-50% of cats over 15 years of age are estimated to have CKD.
- CKD cannot be cured and will progress over time to complete renal failure.
- Though it cannot be cured, certain therapies can slow its progression and improve the quality of life of affected animals while increasing longevity. Eating a prescription veterinary renal diet, regulating high blood pressure, and managing proteinuria (protein leakage in the urine) can help improve the prognosis of CKD in dogs and cats.
- Read our article to learn the warning signs that your pet may have chronic kidney disease and how it is diagnosed and managed with diet, fluid therapy, and medications.
