Home Alone: Separation Anxiety in Pets - The Meowing Vet

Home Alone: Separation Anxiety in Pets
October 5, 2018

  • If your pet becomes especially anxious as you are leaving the house, vocalizes and displays destructive behavior or house-soiling in your absence, and is overly enthusiastic at your return home, your pet may have separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is a behavioral disorder based in fear, in which a dog (or cat) becomes overly anxious when his or her owner leaves the house.
  • Methods of combating separation anxiety include behavior training (the key to overcoming separation anxiety!) and modifying the home environment to help keep your pet feeling safe and calm. Supplemental treatment tools may also help, including antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications and nutritional supplements may also be useful.
  • Some signs of separation anxiety may mimic other behavioral or medical disorders, so schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to ensure that separation anxiety is the true diagnosis. Along with your vet and a reputable pet trainer, you can help reduce your pet’s feelings of separation anxiety.
