Pokémon GO, Pokémon Sit, Pokémon Stay

Love animals? Love the outdoors? Love embracing your inner nerd? Then, Pokémon GO just got way more addictive for you!

An unexpected result of the game (which is really just bird watching 2.0, right?) is its ability to help pets. The app has helped its users get in shape by inadvertently making exercise fun (talk about Pokémon Trainer, amiright? Ba Dum Tsss!). And while you’re enjoying the outdoors, how about taking Fido along with you? Both human and pet obesity is an ever growing issue. A good cardiac workout with your dog in tow all while searching for that evasive Charmander is a win-win for everyone (well, maybe not for Charmander). Perhaps your dog’s excellent sense of smell and sight will help you scout out even more hiding Pokémon!

And while you’re already in play mode, why don’t you and your canine companion pretend to be do-gooders Lassie and Timmy and search for more than just Pokémon? In the several months since the game became an international sensation, multiple reports have surfaced of people coming to the aid of abandoned and injured animals discovered by Pokémon GO users. For instance, several ducklings were rescued from a storm drain in New York and a puppy left for dead was rushed to an emergency veterinary facility in Texas where it underwent surgery to repair multiple fractures.. all thanks to Pokémon enthusiasts who found these animals in need!

We vets are extremely grateful for any Good Samaritan who rescues an ill or injured animal and brings them to us for care, and we love hearing stories about how a fun hobby such as Pokémon GO can be used to aid animals. Some veterinary clinics have a playful attitude toward the game and encourage their clients to cast their Poké Balls while waiting for an appointment. We took an oath to help all animals, so I guess that includes Pikachu???! Additionally, several animal shelters throughout the U.S. have also used the unique appeal of the app to beseech volunteers to take adoptable dogs with them on their outdoor quests. Players are already out exploring their neighborhoods, so taking a shelter dog to also enjoy the fresh air does not take much more time or effort. If you Gotta Catch ‘Em All, contact your local animal shelter or humane society today to ask about their dog walking policies.

However, whether you’re taking your own doggie or a shelter dog on a walk while playing the app, be careful not to get too distracted and forget to keep yourself and your dog safe at all times. Stay in dog-friendly areas away from traffic and crowded streets or paths. Make sure your attention remains on your dog to ensure that he or she is not becoming anxious, overly tired, or overheated while outdoors. A good tip is to use the battery saver mode on your phone while playing the app; this way, you will still receive alerts of nearby Pokémon but you’ll be able to keep your phone in your pocket for the majority of your journey and your eyes on your dog, ensuring a safe and fun time for all. Happy gaming!
