Let’s Get Physical: The Importance of the Veterinary Physical Exam
January 15, 2018

  • Paying for a physical exam nearly each time you go to the vet’s office may be annoying. However, routine physical examinations provide your veterinarian with amazing insight into the overall health of your dog or cat and is an amazing diagnostic tool. You definitely get bang for your buck with a physical exam for your pet!
  • Not only do vets listen to your pet’s heart and lungs, but we also examine your pet’s entire body, including your pet’s behavior, gait, skin and coat, dental health, and many internal organs — all through using our senses of sight, sound, smell, and feel. We gently palpate (or feel) for irregularities in your pet’s GI tract, liver and spleen, as well as urinary and reproductive systems. We vets can oftentimes pick up on internal abnormalities prior to seeing X-rays or ultrasound findings!
  • Physical exams save lives!ย Our pets can’t speak to tell us what may be plaguing them. Through regular physical exams (at least annually; biannually in older pets), veterinarians are able to detect pain and emerging diseases to initiate therapy as soon as possible. Physical exams can act as early cancer screenings and also alert your vet to an emergency that requires immediate treatment.
  • Specialized exams such as orthopedic, neurologic, or ophthalmic exams may be necessary in some cases in order for your vet to focus on specific areas that are troubling your pet’s health.
