Veterinary Article Recap from March

In a State of Collapse: Collapsing Trachea in Dogs - The Meowing Vet

In a State of Collapse: Collapsing Trachea in Dogs
March 5, 2018

  • Collapsing trachea (or tracheal collapse) is a relatively common cause of worsening chronic cough in dogs, particularly small and toy breeds.
  • Tracheal collapse is caused by progressive degeneration of the rigid cartilage rings around the trachea (or windpipe). This process causes the walls of the trachea to sag in time, causing cough and sometimes difficulty breathing.
  • Collapsing trachea is non-curative. However, secondary cough and respiratory distress can be reduced by certain lifestyle changes (such as weight loss and reduction of heavy exercise) and medications.
  • Surgical implants to hold open the trachea can be attempted, but such surgical operations carry risks and may not always be successful.

Don't Get It Twisted: 'I Love Veterinary' Discusses Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) - The Meowing Vet

Don’t Get It Twisted: ‘I Love Veterinary’ Discusses Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)
March 16, 2018

  • I Love Veterinary joined The Meowing Vet as our contributing guest writer last month to talk about canine gastric dilatation-volvulus (or GDV).
  • GDV is a condition in which the stomach can twist in upon itself, causing a serious surgical emergency. It can lead to shock, rupture of the stomach wall, and serious damage to the spleen.
  • GDV most commonly occurs in large breed and giant dogs with a deep chest (such as Great Danes).
  • Prevention of GDV includes prophylactic gastropexy (tacking the stomach wall to prevent future twisting) and particular lifestyle and feeding management changes.
