High Hounds?: The Effects of Marijuana & Cannabis in Dogs & Cats

  • THC, the chemical in marijuana that induces a euphoric high in human users, is actually quite toxic to pets. Therefore, marijuana smoke and edibles. Discover the clinical signs and treatment of marijuana toxicity in dogs and cats.
  • Other chemicals in cannabis products, such as CBD, have been purported as having beneficial health benefits to humans, including pain relief, alleviating feelings of anxiety, and aiding in cases of epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Could CBD benefit pets as well? For now, that answer is “maybe”.
  • Currently, not much research has been performed on the potential benefits of CBD in dogs and cats. However, some research is ongoing, such as a current trial regarding the effects of CBD on canine epilepsy, being conducted at Colorado State University.
  • For now, no FDA-approved product containing cannabis/CBD has been approved in the United States for animal use. Therefore, administering such products to pets is illegal, even in U.S. states in which marijuana has been legalized for human use. More research and dosage determination is needed in order to ensure such products are safe and effective for use in dogs and cats. Stay tuned…
