Baby Got Back: Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in Dogs and Cats - The Meowing Vet

Baby Got Back: Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in Dogs and Cats
June 7, 2018

  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is the most common spinal cord disorder in dogs, typically occurring in dogs over the age of 2. Cats may be affected too.
  • Type I IVDD occurs suddenly, resulting in pain and possible mobility impairment. Dogs between the ages of 2-6 years are most commonly affected. Certain dog breeds are genetically predisposed to this type of IVDD, primarily Dachshunds.
  • 1 in 5 Dachshunds will experience IVDD at some point in their lifetime. Of those, 20% will have another disc problem.
  • Type II IVDD is more chronic in nature, occurring gradually and causing a slow decline in comfort and movement in older dogs. Any dog breed may be affected by this type.
  • In addition to pain and mobility issues that may range from weakness to paralysis, IVDD can also cause other secondary problems, including inability of the bladder to empty on its own and increased likelihood of a urinary tract infection.
  • Depending on the location in the spinal column and severity of the IVDD, either conservative (or medical) management or else surgery may be advised by your vet. Prognosis varies due to these same factors.
  • Certain preventive measures can be done to help reduce your pet’s risk of causing an intervertebral disc problem. These tips include weight control and preventing stressful movement from damaging the spine, including avoiding jumping and stairs.
